How this site makes money, and what that does not buy.

Last updated 19 August 2026

Where things stand today

No link on this site currently earns us a commission. The outbound links you will find in the guides go to HomeGuide, Angi and Home Depot, and they are there because a price we quote came from them. They are citations, not purchases.

That will change. The plan for this site is that it eventually earns from the cheap parts it recommends, because a page that tells you a thirty dollar filter prevents a five thousand dollar repair should be able to pay for itself. When that happens, this page changes on the same day, and it will say which merchants and which kinds of link.

What a commission will never change

  • Whether we tell you to do a job yourself. Sending you to a contractor and selling you a part pay differently, and we are not going to let that decide what a guide says. Where we draw the DIY line, we give the actual reason, so you can check the reasoning rather than trust us.
  • Which part we recommend. If the right answer is a generic part from a shop with no affiliate programme, that is what the guide says.
  • What a job costs. Every figure on this site is published by someone we name and link to. We do not average sourced numbers into a figure of our own and present it as research, and a commission does not get to move one.
  • Whether the fix is free to read. The fix is never behind an email form or a quote request.

What we will not do

We will not run sponsored guides, paid placements dressed as recommendations, or reviews written from a product page rather than from use. If a manufacturer ever pays for anything here, it will say so on the page itself and not only on this one.

Why we are telling you

US Federal Trade Commission guidance asks sites to disclose any material connection to the products they recommend, close to the recommendation and in plain language. We would rather over-disclose: the only thing this site has to sell is whether you believe the cost tables.

Something here look wrong, or a price out of date? Tell us and we will check it against the source.
